Mathieu Matégot, a famous Hungarian designer, is one of the key players in post-war design, making his mark on 1950s style. Now reissued, Mathieu Matégot’s creations remain timeless: design classics! His stroke of genius was to use, from 1945, before everyone else, and in an original way, perforated sheets, a material discovered during his captivity in Germany. Designed in the 1950s, the Tropique collection captures the timeless glamour and exotic luxury of outdoor living on the French Riviera in the mid-20th century. More than 50 years after its creation, and 20 years after the death of its creator, GUBI is proud to pay tribute to Mathieu Matégot by relaunching one of his most popular projects which had not been produced for decades. So Gubi is giving a new generation the chance to live “la dolce vita” as Matégot had imagined it… Developed shortly after his return from the Second World War when he settled in Paris, the Tropique collection was a great success and allowed Matégot to establish his reputation as a designer. The exotic, refined spirit of these curved pieces blends perfectly with a natural environment and outdoor lifestyle.Tropique includes an armchair and a dining table. The structure is made with thin curved steel rods. The curved shapes that punctuate the legs are the signature of Matégot’s style and the distinctive sign that unites the collection, forming a clear and coherent whole.Combining solidity and visual lightness, the Tropique table top is made of perforated steel, Matégot’s favourite material. This light, transparent surface allows light to pass through. The exterior powder coating provides excellent weather protection.
